League Cup: Tottenham 2 Hull City 2 (aet, pens 8-7)

Tottenham picked up their second win over Hull City in four days thanks to penalties after a 2-2 draw in the League Cup on Wednesday.

Spurs edged the Premier League encounter between the sides 1-0 on Sunday, but needed a shootout to move into their first League Cup quarter-final in four years after finishing extra time tied at 2-2 at White Hart Lane.

Ahmed Elmohamady missed the decisive kick in sudden death to hand Tottenham an 8-7 victory on spot kicks.

Gylfi Sigurdsson put the hosts ahead early on in stunning fashion, as he collected a ball from Kyle Naughton and turned neatly away from Curtis Davies before firing an unstoppable effort into Eldin Jakupovic's right-hand corner from outside the box.

Davies then brought Hull level after 52 minutes when he nudged home with a good deal of help from Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

It looked for a moment as if the defender may have spurned the chance when he directed Elmohamady's teasing delivery back across goal and Friedel failed to collect the ball, allowing it to trickle over the line.

That proved to be the final goal of normal time, with Paul McShane giving Hull hope with his crashing header before Harry Kane fired Spurs level two minutes into the second half of extra time.

The sides could not be separated after 120 minutes and Sigurdsson scored the opening penalty before Aaron McLean's kick was saved well by Friedel.

Jermain Defoe, Stephen Quinn, Jan Vertonghen and George Boyd all then converted, before Erik Lamela's effort was saved to allow Gedo to level matters for Hull.

Kane kept cool to fire past Jakupovic and Nick Proschwitz then sent the shootout into sudden death, where the likes of Paulinho and David Meyler kept their nerve before Elmohamady's kick was saved to end a run of seven successive penalty shootout defeats for Spurs.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas made eight changes from Sunday's victory at White Hart Lane, with Kaboul coming in for his first start since the 2-0 UEFA Europa League win over Anzhi Makhachkala on October 3.

Bruce brought Danny Graham, Robert Koren and Stephen Quinn into Hull’s starting XI, while also handing Jakupovic his first start of the season. Leading goalscorer Robbie Brady failed to make the bench as he continues to recover from hernia surgery.

Spurs almost went ahead after nine minutes when Paul McShane, under pressure from the lingering Defoe, headed a Paulinho delivery just past his own post.

The Brazilian midfielder then lashed a shot wide as the hosts began to dominate possession and create chances.

And after 16 minutes, Tottenham’s dominance was rewarded when Sigurdsson cleverly turned his marker and smashed a long-range drive past a helpless Jakupovic.

Following Villas-Boas' comments on the "difficult" atmosphere at White Hart Lane during Sunday's game, Sigurdsson's goal certainly gave the home fans something to cheer, and Spurs continued to enjoy plenty of the ball.

Hull were level seven minutes after the interval, though, courtesy of Friedel’s error when dealing with Davies' close-range effort.

Tottenham substitute Kane almost spared his side extra time but his 20-yard effort in the final minute of normal time cannoned back off the post.

Nine minutes into extra time, McShane's powerful header had too much for Friedel, only for Kane to bring Tottenham back into the game by striking left-footed past Jakupovic inside the area.

This forced the penalty shootout with Friedel atoning for his earlier error by saving Elmohamady's penalty to ensure his side will face West Ham at home in the quarter-final.

League Cup: Newcastle United 0 Manchester City 2 (aet)

Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko scored in extra time to spare Manchester City's blushes in a 2-0 League Cup victory at Newcastle United.

Newcastle will feel hard done by after taking the match to Manuel Pellegrini's side, but they failed to find a breakthrough and were left to rue goals from Negredo and Dzeko that put City into the quarter-finals.

Alan Pardew's men created the best chances of the first half and the home team thought they had the lead through a close-range Shola Ameobi effort, but he was adjudged to be offside.

City – who last won the competition in 1976 - improved after half-time with former Newcastle man James Milner coming closest with a long-range curler. Papiss Cisse wasted a great chance to put Newcastle ahead in extra time when he volleyed straight at Costel Pantilimon.

And Newcastle were duly punished by Negredo's side-footed effort from Dzeko's low centre, before the Bosnia-Herzegovina international added gloss to the scoreline when he finished Milner's sublime pass.

Both teams took the opportunity to rotate their squads, Ameobi made a rare start for Newcastle, while Pantilimon replaced under-fire goalkeeper Joe Hart for City.

In a lacklustre opening, Newcastle came closest to opening the scoring when Ameobi flicked on Tim Krul's long pass and Cisse lofted his effort over the goalkeeper and just wide of the post.

Some stout defending gave Newcastle a solid base and they were nearly rewarded on the half-hour mark when Ameobi's half-volley forced Pantilimon into a smart one-handed save.

Pardew's side thought they had taken the lead with the next attack when Ameobi tapped home Cisse's centre but his celebrations were curtailed by the offside flag.

After struggling to make an impact in the first half, City came out with more intent after the break and nearly went ahead when Jesus Navas dispossessed Krul and laid back to Milner, who curled his 25-yard effort at the open goal just wide.

City were now in the ascendancy and Negredo wasted a golden opportunity to grab the winner. The Spain international received Dzeko's lay-off in the area, but took too many touches before chipping tamely at Krul.

That would prove the best opportunity of the closing stages as the match headed for extra time.

Newcastle made a fast-paced start after the restart and Cisse missed his side's clearest chance of the game when he sprung the offside trap only to shoot straight at Pantilimon.

That miss would prove costly as City edged ahead in the ninth minute of extra time.

Dzeko broke down the left and crossed low for Negredo to calmly slot past Krul.

And, in the 105th minute, the game was put beyond doubt. Milner drove at the Newcastle defence and played a superb pass with the outside of his foot to Dzeko, who rounded Krul and slotted into the empty net.

Newcastle almost grabbed a consolation when Joleon Lescott cleared Hatem Ben Arfa's driven effort off the line as City booked their place in the last eight.

Costa explains Spain selection

Diego Costa has revealed that he turned down Brazil to play for Spain as he felt indebted to his adopted homeland.

Costa's international future had been at the centre of much speculation, with both Brazil and Spain stating their wish to select the 25-year-old, who has dual-nationality after residing in Spain for more than five years.

However, the Atletico Madrid striker ended months of conjecture on Tuesday as it was announced that he had signed a letter to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) declaring his intention to play for the reigning world and European champions.

The decision provoked the ire of Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who accused Costa of "turning his back on a dream of millions".

But Costa has been quick to clarify why he chose to represent Spain, expressing his desire to repay the country he feels is responsible for his football career.

"I hope people understand and respect my decision because it has been very difficult," he told Atletico Madrid's official website.

"It was very difficult to choose between the country where you were born and the country that has given you everything.

"I looked at everything and saw that it was right and best to play for Spain because this is where I have done everything. All that I have in my life was given to me by this country.

"I have a special affection. Here I feel very appreciated for all that I do and I feel the love of the people.

"I hope people understand because it is not something against Brazil.

"I have family in Brazil and it is the country where I was born. I hope that God allows me to live there again in the future."

Wenger: Defensive mistakes costly in League Cup exit

Arsene Wenger was left to rue defensive errors from his Arsenal side as they crashed out of the League Cup at home to London rivals Chelsea.

Wenger has now failed to beat a Chelsea side managed by Jose Mourinho in nine attempts after a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Cesar Azpilicueta scored his first goal for Chelsea and Juan Mata got off the mark for the season as Mourinho's charges secured a deserved win to move into the last eight.

Azpilicueta's opener came as a result of a mistake from right-back Carl Jenkinson, who failed to get enough on an attempted header back to Lukasz Fabianski that allowed the Spanish full-back to nip in apply the finish.

Wenger made eight changes to the side that beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday and, although Mourinho made 10 alternations to his starting line-up, Chelsea were still able to field an experienced side.

The Arsenal boss felt his side paid the price for being naive, but backed his table-toppers to put their League Cup exit behind them when they face Livepool in the Premier League on Saturday.

Wenger said: "I think it was a very tight game that was decided by one or two mistakes.

"We were a bit naive in some situations. We gave them a chance to counter-attack when we went 1-0 down and we didn't create many chances ourselves."

He added: "We have to respond well against Liverpool on Saturday because we are in a strong position in the league

"Let's not go too quickly to conclusions because we have taken more points than anybody since January."

League Cup Preview: Tottenham v Hull City

Tottenham and Hull City will do battle for the second time in four days, with the two sides vying for victory in the League Cup.

Andre Villas-Boas' charges secured a 1-0 triumph over Hull in Sunday's Premier League encounter, and Tottenham will once again welcome Steve Bruce's side to White Hart Lane on Wednesday.

Tottenham's victory came in debatable circumstances, as referee Michael Oliver awarded a penalty against Ahmed Elmohamady for handball.

The decision appeared a harsh one, with the Egyptian seemingly unintentionally using his arm to block Jan Vertonghen's cross.

Spain international Roberto Soldado duly converted the spot-kick - his third from 12 yards already this season - as Tottenham secured back-to-back top-flight victories, much to the chagrin of Bruce.

The fixture with Hull represents Tottenham's third match in the space of just seven days, meaning Villas-Boas could rotate his squad with the likes of close-season signing Erik Lamela coming into contention.

The former Roma midfielder has yet to start a Premier League game for the club, and Villas-Boas admits he is looking for the 21-year-old to stake his claim for a starting spot.

"With Erik it was a little bit more difficult but we have given him massive, massive help and his family arrived this week," he said.

"He knows he isn't producing half of what he can produce but he understands the situation now is that he has to compete for his place."

The game is likely to come too soon for Etienne Capoue, despite his return to training from an ankle injury, while Danny Rose is out with a similar problem, but Andros Townsend is not expected to be sidelined after he fell into a cameraman's pit in Sunday's fixture, injuring his wrist in the process.

In general Hull have been in good form upon their return to the top flight, with Bruce's side taking 11 points from nine matches, and they occupy 10th spot in the league.

But Sunday's reverse means they have gone three games without a Premier League victory, including losses in their last two matches.

Hull head into the match with an extensive injury list that includes goalkeeper Allan McGregor (thigh), defenders James Chester (hamstring) and Abdoulaye Faye (knock) and forwards Sone Aluko (calf) and Danny Graham (hamstring).

Tottenham defeated Aston Villa in the previous stage, while Hull have seen off challenges from Leyton Orient and Huddersfield Town to make round four.
